What's Your Interior Design Personality?

If you’re anything like me, every so often, you just can’t resist clicking on those quick Facebook quizzes to discover what state you should live in, what your real career should be, or which character you’d be in Outlander.

I think it’s natural. We all want to know more about ourselves and about what makes us tick. These fun personality quizzes are just entertaining drops in the bucket of who we are. As enjoyable as these bite-sized quizzes are, however, we know there isn’t much substance to them.

It wasn’t until I took a formal, tried-and-true personality test that I finally got some real insights into my own persona. Once the results were revealed, I understood that those aspects of my personality that I found quirky or understated, or assumed were a wiring malfunction, were actually all completely normal. Who knew?

I bet you have realized the same. Our personalities determine so much about the paths we choose to take in our lives, the people we surround ourselves with, how we seek joy and comfort, and the environments we’re drawn to. And of course, our personalities even play a major role in the way we design and experience our homes.

Embracing Personality to Enhance the Home

After taking the personality test and finally feeling my true self validated, I felt liberated. I could design my home for my needs? Rather than what Pinterest said I should want? Yes, please.

Suddenly, it was easy. I was able to weed out all of the design choices that were meant for everyone else. I was amazed at the ease at which I was able to tune out the noise of so many distracting design options and focus on those that spoke to me. Embracing my personality meant giving my creativity free reign, which ultimately brought about a home perfectly aligned with each and every layer of who I am.

The results were so life-giving that now I’m committed to helping you do the same.

How the Holistic Design Process Incorporates Your Personality

So, how does your unique personality play a role in the interior design process? Holistic design differs from traditional interior design by putting you at the center of everything: the inspiration, the design concept, the functionality, and the personality it represents.

Step 1. Personality Test & Getting to Know Each Other

I know this is unorthodox, but I simply love using personality tests as part of my design process. They tell me a lot about you: how you interact with others, what makes you content, what drives you crazy, and how you react to different scenarios. These types of questions can be fun to discuss, but my real intent is to get to something deeper.

When I learn information about your personality, I can determine how you need your space to support you. The goal of holistic design is to create a setting designed for your optimal comfort, which is unique to you. Personality tests give subtle insights into your specific design needs. This is the foundation upon which we build.

Step 2. Identifying the Style that Resonates Most with You

Just as it’s not Pinterest’s job to tell me what I like, it’s not my job to tell you what you like. Only you can be the judge! As an interior designer, however, it is my job to discover what you’re drawn to.

I take this role seriously, and take it one step further than most— I make sure that your personality is represented by your home and everything in it. This is what really sets holistic design apart from traditional interior design. After all, who wants to live in a home where they don’t feel at home?

Our discoveries during this step will determine the visual direction of your home. Layered on top of the foundation from Step 1, we are well on our way to creating a truly unique, embracing, and inspiring home.

Step 3. Gathering Inspiration from Your Memories

Without a doubt, learning about my clients’ past experiences is my favorite part of the design process. People absolutely light up when they tell stories about their fondest memories. When I ask questions like “What was your favorite place to play when you were a kid?” or “Describe your family history of a place,” the joy people experience when recalling those special moments is obvious.

When you share your most beloved memories with me, I tune in to the specific moments and images, as those are actually the juicy details that make your memories special. These become the final elements that I like to sprinkle like seasonings throughout the home. It’s what brings those memories to life again each day.

It’s when we combine those 3 layers — personality, style, and memories — that we have created a truly special design plan.

How Design is Different from a Personality Test

Personality tests are fun, but doesn’t it make sense to do something meaningful with your results? Exactly. Incorporating your unique personality into your home transforms knowledge into action, and it’s a vital component of holistic design.

When you are surrounded by a design that is perfectly aligned with who you are at your core, your emotional connection with your home is strengthened and you are free to live your most fulfilling life. That is what I want for you. And I guarantee you’ll never see your home the same way again.

If you’re ready to uncover your personality and for your home to be a true reflection of you, I’d love to chat with you. Reach out to me here, and let’s get to know each other.

Until next time,
